It’s 2024. We all know the importance of recycling, avoiding single-use plastics, and reducing food waste. Even our children! I love it when the kiddos come home with worksheets about “going green.”
But did you know that there are many other ways to support Mama Earth, particularly at home? There’s so much untapped potential here! You can roll your recycling bin out to the curb every couple of weeks and carry a metal straw in your purse, but there’s even more room for improvement.
As a realtor in the Bridgewater area, I’m always amazed by the impact of small environmental changes. So, if you’re looking to reduce both your footprint and your utility costs, I have some ideas for you.
First, I recommend installing a smart thermostat. This will allow you to program your temperature settings based on the season, your schedule, and, of course, your preferences. It will keep you comfortable while also maintaining energy efficiency.
Another option is to take advantage of energy-efficient appliances. Ovens aren’t especially “green,” so when you can, whip out the slow cooker or air fryer. You’d be surprised by the difference this makes in your energy costs.
And speaking of appliances, do you wash your clothes in cold water? If not, it’s a good time to start. Running a cold water wash saves a ton of energy — and it also protects your clothes! Hot water tends to cause shrinkage and fading over time, so by using cold water, you’re saving your clothing, your money, and the planet. It’s a win-win-win!
If you’re up for a bigger project, installing dual-pane windows is always an option. They help improve energy efficiency while also reducing noise, increasing security, and providing UV protection. Plus, they raise the value of your home.
And finally, never underestimate the power (pun intended) of turning off your lights and unplugging your electronics when you aren’t using them. Things like toasters, desktop computers, TVs, and video game consoles are common sources of “vampire energy,” which sucks the life out of your bank account. By unplugging these things, you’ll be saving money while giving the environment a boost.
Going green doesn’t have to be complicated. Every little improvement counts. Start with something small (like eliminating some vampire energy) and go from there!
